Visiting Eastern Missouri
It’s a great time to visit eastern Missouri. The steamy summer is but a distant memory and the crisp winter days open up a wealth of opportunities for cold-weather outdoor activities across the region's state parks. What’s more, a fortune of family-friendly fun awaits this season’s visitors. Community festivals, holiday celebrations, sports, and more – there’s plenty to see in the Show Me State’s eastern half this time of year.
Before the snow starts to fall, get a lay of the land while finding a sense of eastern Missouri personality on a scenic driving tour. Road trippers traveling along the Mississippi River will encounter plenty of reasons to get out and stretch their legs – attractions like the Southeast Missouri Agricultural Museum in Sikeston and the Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse in Hannibal certainly make for interesting highlights.
Jefferson City visitors have the chance to offset that big meal on November 26th. The 2016 Thanksgiving Day Pie Run is a festive 5K and 10K starting at the North Jefferson Pavilion in nearby Cedar City at 8:30 a.m. Non-perishable food donations are also encouraged – it’s a chance to get active for a good cause.
The following weekend, the spirit of the holiday season sweeps over the capital city. On December 5th, the 77th Annual Jefferson City Jaycees Christmas Parade sends dozens of festive floats, marching bands, and other entertainers through the streets of the downtown area. Get there early to find the best spot – the parade starts moving at 4:30 p.m.
The holiday cheer continues in Missouri’s historic former capital city of St. Charles. Gather with residents at the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site on December 13th to hear a retelling of Twas the Night Before Christmas while enjoying a warm fire and refreshments.
To the southwest along the Missouri River, Washington shows off its rich history while putting on a dazzling holiday display on December 13th. The 2016 Washington Holiday House Tour invites visitors to explore some of the downtown area’s most iconic and idyllic homes decked out in holiday trimming. Tours are open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Car guys and gals gear up for the 2017 St. Louis Auto Show, January 28th through 30th. It’s a chance to catch a glimpse of rare and classic cars as well as check out the new lines of domestic and foreign manufacturers at America's Center, located downtown, just a couple of blocks away from the world-famous Gateway Arch.
