George Washington Carver National Monument

Found just southeast of Joplin and north of Neosho, the George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the boyhood home of George Washington Carver – famed American scientist and inventor. Carver’s eastern Missouri home – including the Moses Carver house and Carver cemetery – was named a national monument in 1946.

Visitors can explore the 210-acre park via nature trail, on-site museum, and through several interactive workshops and student programs. Most notably, park volunteers lead groups into Carver’s secret garden for interactive visits, while students are encouraged to participate in a group painting or art workshop.

Missouri Southern State University

Established in 1937, Missouri Southern State University is located in Joplin, Missouri. Also known as Missouri Southern, MSSU, or MoSo, the western Missouri school enrolls a yearly average of nearly 5,600 students.
